Accessibility Standards
What every Gallaudet web property must meet, and the reference tables for meeting it.
These are the requirements, not suggestions. They apply to any web property using the Gallaudet brand, hosted under gallaudet.edu, or representing a Gallaudet department, program or initiative — including work produced by outside vendors and agencies.
Start with the requirements
Microsite Accessibility Requirements is the document to hand a vendor. It covers the full requirement set and — most usefully — carries pre-calculated contrast ratios for every brand colour, so nobody has to work them out or guess.
Then the format-specific guides
Two formats cause most of our accessibility failures, and both have their own guide:
- PDF Accessibility Guide — PDFs are the single largest accessibility gap on most higher-ed websites. Read this before you export.
- Social Media Accessibility Guide — for department social media managers. Alt text, captions, ASL, hashtags and emoji.
Reporting a problem
Anyone can report an accessibility barrier on gallaudet.edu at gu.live/request. The web team responds within 5 business days.
