Biologist Rami Traurig, ’12, was recently featured in a video interview for his work at the NIH Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD). CARD, a collaborative initiative of the National Institute on Aging and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, supports research that will lead to improved treatments and preventions for these diseases.
In the interview, Traurig explains that he extracts DNA from brain samples as part of the long-read sequencing team. “Long-read sequencing can reveal different sections of DNA than traditional sequencing techniques,” he says. “This can help us find more variants related to dementia and other diseases.”
The more they learn, the more they are able to collaborate with other scientists around the world also trying to find solutions. “We have to break this problem down into little parts and then piece the puzzle back together,” he says.
