Dear University Community,

We are aware of the concerns about the Department of Public Safety (DPS) incident in a residence hall on Sunday night, October 11, and the videos and commentary circulating on social media. We understand the distress, hurt, and anger the footage has caused, as well as our community’s questions about what happened and how the University is responding.

The University took immediate action following the incident, placing the officer involved on administrative leave last Monday and initiating steps to begin an investigation. We are committed to a thorough and fair review. We have reached out to students to acknowledge the incident and offered any support needed to them.

Our students are at the heart of our community, and their safety, well-being, and dignity matter deeply to us. Gallaudet does not condone the misuse of force by any member of our community. Every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and every student should feel safe and respected at Gallaudet.

As we gather for Homecoming and welcome our alumni home, we reaffirm our commitment to a safe and welcoming campus every day. Each of us has a role in that commitment by treating one another with respect and following University policies and procedures. The University is responsible for upholding those standards and ensuring accountability, including among those entrusted with protecting our community.
