Gallaudet has named Dr. Carol J. Erting as the university’s new provost effective in July 2014. Erting will replace Dr. Stephen Weiner, who has served as provost since 2007.

“Dr. Carol Erting has been a part of the Gallaudet community for many years and is an ardent supporter of education for deaf and hard of hearing individuals,” said Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz. “Dr. Erting has immense institutional knowledge and I am fully confident she will be an effective leader for our faculty, staff, and students and continue to advance the programs and services offered by our university.”

As provost, Erting will provide leadership for all academic units at the university, including its undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs. She will also oversee the offices responsible for student affairs, the university library and archives, American Sign Language diagnostic and evaluation services, student support services, academic quality and planning, assessment, and institutional research.

As we move forward, we will continue to provide our students with unparalleled access to living and learning opportunities for academic, personal, and professional growth.”

Erting is currently associate provost for research and dean of the Graduate School, Continuing Studies and International Programs. During her career at Gallaudet, she has served as dean of the Graduate School and Professional Programs, chair of the Education Department, and has been a faculty member in three different departments. Erting is currently co-principal investigator of the Gallaudet Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative investigating issues of linguistic diversity and visual teaching and learning in Gallaudet classrooms.

Erting was a member of the Gallaudet Research Institute for 15 years, serving as director of the Culture and Communications Study Program and program chair of The Deaf Way (1989), an international conference on the history, language and culture of deaf communities. Her ethnographic research in deaf homes, schools, and classrooms has focused on language, culture, and literacy with interest in collaborative partnerships between researchers, teachers and caregivers. She has contributed numerous scholarly articles, chapters, and books to the literature on socialization and education in the deaf community from a cultural and linguistic perspective.

Erting holds a B.S. in Communication Disorders: Deaf Education and a M.A. in Communication Disorders from Northwestern University; a Q.E. in Social Anthropology from London University; and a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from American University.

Her specializations include language and culture; deaf communities; ethnographic educational research: ASL/English bilingual education (preschool); language, culture and literacy; language socialization-deaf communities; and parent-child interaction.
