Five students awarded Gilman Scholarships
Five Gallaudet University students have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships by the United States Department of State. Congratulations to Emma Balderas, Anyia Brown, Anley Cardozo, Tracy Dunlap, and Jazleen Garcia! Balderas, Dunlap, and Garcia planned to do internships this summer with the Instituto Pedagogico Para Problemas de Lenguajes in Mexico, while Brown and Cardozo were to work with a Deaf-owned coffee shop in South Africa. According to Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn, Manager of Education Abroad and International Fellowships in the Office of International Affairs, the five awardees have the option of deferring their internships to 2021 or participating in a virtual international program.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. It is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university.
The Gilman program was created by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, and is named in honor of Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman (R-New York). It is administered by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. For more information, visit gilmanscholarship.org.
