Athletics roundup
Senior Hannah Wetzel continues to rewrite the Gallaudet Athletics record book in women’s outdoor track and field. Last week, she broke her own school record in the high jump. Earlier this season, she set new records in the long jump and triple jump.
Wetzel set a new school record of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) in the high jump during the Stevenson Invitational on April 12 at Stevenson University. Her record in the long jump is 5.41 meters (17 feet, 7.5 inches), set on April 6 at home during the Bison Classic. In the triple jump, she set a new record of 11.71 meters (38 feet, 5 inches) on March 30 at the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary’s College.
She also holds the school records in all three events for indoor track and field.
Oceana Brown has established four new school records in the outdoor 100-meter and 200-meter dash and the indoor 60-meter and 200-meter dash, all in her first year. Brown ran the 100-meter dash in 12.19 seconds on April 6 at the Bison Classic, and the 200-meter dash in 25.05 seconds on March 23 at the Doc Jepson Invitational. During the indoor season, she ran the 60-meter dash in 7.79 seconds on February 26 at the United East Conference championships. Just ten days before, on February 16, she ran the 200-meter dash in 25.92 seconds at the Navy Select meet.
Five new school records have been set this season in men’s outdoor track and field. All-American sprinter Eric Gregory holds three of them outright, in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. He was also part of the 4×100-meter relay team, along with Walter Douglas, Gareth Ashton, and Trey Johnson. Pole vaulter Liam Painter holds the school record in the pole vault. In men’s indoor track and field, seven records have fallen. Gregory holds four of them, in the 60-, 100-, 300-, and 400-meter dashes. Ashton, Johnson, Gregory, and Douglas set a new school record in the 4×400-meter relay, and the team of Kyle D’Amore, Cristian Martinez-White, Samson Abraham, and Troy Holcomb did the same in the distance medley. Painter holds the indoor pole vault record in addition to his outdoor record.
