Study abroad programs brought students to Spain, Italy, and Japan this summer

Sign Language of Spain (LSE) and Spanish Deaf Culture in Madrid Program: Eleven Gallaudet students immersed themselves in Spanish Sign Language (LSE) and the country’s Deaf culture by engaging in a transformative journey to Madrid from June 1 to June 30. The students not only deepened their understanding of LSE and Spanish Deaf culture, they broadened their global perspectives through rigorous academic coursework and cultural engagement.

Forum promotes equal access for international deaf students seeking U.S. higher education

Fatuma Kuti, a citizen of Kenya, stood before a group of higher education advisors and regional coordinators from around 44 nations in Gallaudet University’s ‘Ole Jim Alumni House on July 29, 2024. Without the aid of an interpreter, she used American Sign Language to ask them for advice on how to apply for admission to a U.S. college or university. When she finished her query, a prolonged silence filled the room.

Graduate students bring cognitive science to deaf K-12 classrooms and beyond

What happens when you touch something, asks Misa Suzuki, G-’24. “Does the touch stay on your hand or go to your brain?” That was a question she asked students at the Maryland School for the Deaf Columbia Campus (MSD-C) during a recent visit introducing them to the wonders of the nervous system and scientific research. “Students were almost too excited,” she says. “One kid even got up on stage with me.”
