Alcestis 2020 (world premiere)

by Garrett Zeurcher

directed by MoMo Holt

A modern, highly-topical adaptation of Euripides’ tragedy, Alcestis, that takes a look at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a modern family from rural Georgia and the deeply-buried secrets that are finally brought to the surface. Recognized with the 2021 Zarkower Award from Hunter College’s Theatre Department for exemplary achievement by a first-year MFA student, this play revolves around a mixed-race gay couple raising their adopted son, around whom the world – both public and personal – implodes.

Performances take place in late October and early November.

Spring 2027:

Henry IV

by William Shakespeare

cut and direction by Ethan Sinnott

Set in an England gripped by instability, division, and anxiety over the future, the play mirrors a contemporary United States wrestling with similar questions.

Weaving together fierce battles for the crown with the wit and humanity of Prince Hal and Falstaff — alongside a guilt-ridden and increasingly ailing King Henry IV haunted by the consequences of his rise to power — this landmark production transforms Shakespeare’s language into a richly embodied theatrical experience going all in on its visual storytelling.

Shakespeare’s timeless epic of power, rebellion, and legacy arrives in a groundbreaking new form. This historic production of Henry IV marks the first known staging of the play performed in American Sign Language with a primarily Deaf cast. For this production, faculty member Ethan Sinnott will create an original adaptation that combines Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2, and Richard II into a unified theatrical script, tracing the political and personal consequences of leadership and responsibility.

Performances take place in mid-April.
