Dr. Judy Harkins wins lifetime achievement award
Dr. Judy Harkins, a professor in the Communication Studies Department and director of the Technology Access Program (TAP), was selected as the 2009 recipient of the I. Lee Brody Lifetime Achievement Award given by Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. (TDI). She received the award at TDI’s 18th Biennial Conference, held August 1 at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The biennial award goes to an individual who has devoted significant time and energy over an extended number of years to improving accessibility to telecommunications, media, and information technology in the United States. TDI recognized Harkins for the numerous achievements she has made throughout her career, including her research into accessible technologies, emergency alerting systems, and her leadership of TAP.
Past recipients of the Brody award include Dr. Benjamin Soukup (2001), chief executive officer of Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc. and chair of the Gallaudet Board of Trustees, and Dr. Robert Davila (2003), president of Gallaudet University.
