New feature to Gallaudet scoreboard offers greater accessibility for Bison fans
Gallaudet University is pleased to announce the recent addition of a full-color message display to the scoreboard in Hotchkiss Field. The large Daktronics electronic message center, which was supported by Sorenson Communications, allows greater communication access for deaf and hard of hearing fans because it will relay important announcements during Bison football and soccer games.
Established in 1864, Gallaudet University is the world’s only liberal arts university in which all programs are designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students.
Sorenson Communications, a provider of communications products and services for the deaf and hard of hearing, is featured prominently at the bottom of the scoreboard because of their support for the project.
“Gallaudet University has a strong sense of community and our athletic teams have many loyal fans who will be excited about the upgraded scoreboard,” said Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz, who was recently elected Chair of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) President’s Council. “We deeply appreciated the generosity of Sorenson Communications.”
“Gallaudet Athletics would like to thank Sorenson Communications for its support in helping us get this new message display which will benefit everyone who attends Bison games,” said Gallaudet University Director of Athletics Michael Weinstock.
Keeping with Gallaudet’s commitment to sustainability, the new electronic message center uses energy-efficient, low-maintenance, light emitting diode (LED) technology.
Gallaudet University, federally chartered in 1864, is a bilingual, diverse, multicultural institution of higher education that ensures the intellectual and professional advancement of deaf and hard of hearing individuals through American Sign Language and English. Gallaudet maintains a proud tradition of research and scholarly activity and prepares its graduates for career opportunities in a highly competitive, technological, and rapidly changing world.
Sorenson Communications is a provider of industry-leading communications products and services for the deaf and hard of hearing. The company’s offerings include Sorenson Video Relay Service (SVRS), the highest-quality video interpreting service; the new Sorenson ntouch VP videophone, designed especially for use by deaf individuals; ntouch PC, software that connects users to SVRS by using a PC and webcam; ntouch Mobile, an application empowering SVRS communication via mobile devices; and Sorenson IP Relay (SIPRelay), a text-to-speech relay service.
