Athletic Honorees

Fifty-eight of Gallaudet’s 145 student-athletes in one or more conference sports were among the Capital Athletic Conference’s (CAC) All-Academic honorees for the 2009-10 school year. The honorees were selected for posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher during the year.

Forty percent of Gallaudet’s student-athletes met or exceeded the minimum GPA mark, the fourth-highest mark in the conference. Four Bison student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2009-10 school year: women’s soccer freshman Johanna Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.), men’s swimming junior Kyle Dacus (The Woodlands, Tex.), volleyball senior Amanda Krieger (Carmel, Ind.), and women’s cross country junior Kirsten Swanson (Grapevine, Tex.).

Two of the selected students, Kevin Berrigan (Frederick, Md.) and Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.), also took home gold medals with their teams in the U21 World Deaf Basketball Championships that wrapped up on July 3 in Lublin, Poland.

Gallaudet has 13 sports in the CAC, and all but one had at least one student-athlete represented on the conference All-Academic team. Bison teams with the most CAC All-Academic selections were volleyball (10 selections) and women’s swimming (nine). Men’s swimming (seven) and men’s soccer (seven) were the top men’s sports teams. Volleyball (10 student-athletes out of 11) and women’s cross country (six out of seven) were one student-athlete shy of a clean sweep of having their entire roster on the All-Academic team. Gallaudet’s volleyball team had the highest percentage, with over 90 percent of its roster on the All-Academic team.

The University’s 58 honorees are the second-highest total in the past four years. Last year, Gallaudet had 62 honorees out of 136 student-athletes (45.6 percent). In 2007-08 the Bison had 44 honorees and in 2006-07 Gallaudet placed 57 student-athletes on the conference All-Academic team.

Gallaudet, a charter member of the CAC since 1989, finished its final year in the conference this past spring and officially joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference this summer.
