Passing of retired professor Jorge Soler
We learned this week that Dr. Jorge Leoncio Soler, who taught philosophy at Gallaudet from 1968 to 1992, passed away on August 6. He was 96 years old. Dr. Soler was born in Cuba. He was educated in the Jesuit tradition and became a Jesuit brother. Subsequently, he left the order and married Conchita Miyares, who survives him. In 1960, he and Conchita fled the Communist revolution in Cuba for New York City, and later settled in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Soler received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Buffalo in 1971. He was a scholar of classical Greek and Roman language and philosophy. After retiring from Gallaudet, he worked as a translator and consultant. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and three grandchildren. We send our condolences to Dr. Soler’s family.
