Overview

In the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (CAN) Lab at Gallaudet University, we understand complex learning processes and improve educational outcomes for deaf and hearing children by developing flexible and implementable educational strategies based on research.

We investigate the cognitive and affective processes that influence learning and how negative emotions, such as anxiety, can have detrimental mental, biological, and academic outcomes. One of our significant studies focuses on math anxiety, which is virtually unstudied in young deaf children. We examine these neurobiological processes using fMRI and psychophysiology and behavioral measurements in both the lab and classroom.
