Encourage Career Exploration Early

Students do not need to have everything figured out immediately.

Encourage them to:

  • Explore different interests

  • Attend career events

  • Meet with career advisers

  • Ask questions

  • Learn from experience

Promote Experiential Learning

Encourage your student to pursue:

  • Internships

  • Research opportunities

  • Campus employment

  • Volunteer experiences

  • Leadership roles

These experiences often matter as much as classroom learning when seeking employment.

Encourage Professional Networking

Many opportunities come through relationships.

Students should:

  • Attend networking events

  • Connect with alumni

  • Build relationships with professors

  • Participate in professional organizations

Help Students Develop Independence

Rather than solving problems for students, encourage them to:

  • Contact offices directly

  • Schedule appointments themselves

  • Communicate with employers

  • Practice self-advocacy

These skills are critical for long-term success.
