Each year, the Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA) recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing communities. In 2026, ten community members will be honored for their amazing work!

The recipients will receive their awards at the annual GUAA Charter Day Awards Brunch on the Gallaudet campus on April 11, 2026. Tickets are available now.

GUAA Above and Beyond Volunteer Award in honor of Pauline ‘Polly’ Peikoff, E-’36

Linda Hatrak Cundy, ‘74

Based in Alberta, Canada, Linda is being recognized for over 45 years of exceptional volunteer service. Her unwavering dedication has touched over 30 organizations at the local, provincial, national, and international levels, contributing to advocacy, the arts, interpreting, sports, and more.

Honored for their powerful and tireless advocacy on behalf of Deaf autistic individuals. Inspired by their children, they have worked diligently to raise awareness that people with autism deserve the same human rights as everyone else. Their efforts include educating professionals in the educational, medical, and legal fields on how to create environments that are inclusive, understanding, and supportive for Deaf autistic individuals.

Outstanding Young Alumnus Award

Octavio Cuenca Maldonado, ‘22

Celebrated for his passionate leadership and advocacy with organizations such as the National Hispanic Latino Association of the Deaf and the New Jersey Association of the Deaf. His tireless advocacy includes working to advance legislation such as the LEAD-K law and a mental health bill supporting the Deaf community in New Jersey.

David “DJ” Kurs, ‘98

Recognized for his visionary leadership as Artistic Director of Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles. Through innovative bilingual productions, he has elevated Deaf talent, amplified Deaf stories, and expanded Deaf representation on both national and international stages.

Wawa had a bold vision, and together, this group brought that vision to life. WAWABILITY, held this past July in Washington, D.C., was an event that redefined accessibility on an international stage, demonstrating how innovation can transform a dream into reality.
