Miyu Nakamura, an International Visiting Scholar from Japan, is at Gallaudet University for the spring 2024 semester to further her teaching and research activities and career curriculum development for deaf and hard of hearing students. Nakamura is a student in the Honors Program at Kokugakuin University, a private research university in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, where she is working on a thesis titled “Differences in Employment opportunities and Income for Deaf Collegiate Graduates in Japan compared to the United States.”
With the support of Dr. Kota Takayama, an associate professor in Gallaudet’s Social Work program, Nakamura is observing classrooms for deaf and hard of hearing students, especially in the English Language Institute and World Languages and Culture programs, and conducting research on deaf career development programs. Her goals as an IVS at Gallaudet are twofold: conduct research as it relates to curriculum development, teaching, learning, and other activities that will further the understanding of English/bilingual education for deaf and hard of hearing students; and to build connections between the children of deaf adults communities in Japan and at Gallaudet.
