Gregory named All-American for fifth time
The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men’s indoor track and field All-America honorees for NCAA Division III this season on March 11. Gallaudet University senior Eric Gregory earned his second career indoor All-America honor and fifth overall (including outdoor track and field).
Athletes of member institutions who finished in the top eight of their respective individual events and relays at the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, took home First Team All-America honors, while those who placed ninth through 16th individually and ninth and 10th as part of a relay earned Second Team All-America. This is the first year with second team honors. Gregory finished second in the 200-meter dash to pick up a second straight All-American honor in that indoor event. He also has three USTFCCCA All-America outdoor honors, with two coming in the 400-meter dash (2022, 2023) and one in the 200-meter dash (2022).
Senior Hannah Wetzel was named a Second Team All-American after finishing 11th in the women’s high jump.
Gregory and Wetzel join six other Gallaudetians who have been named All-Americans in track and field since 1983: Darius Flowers, ’14 (triple jump, 2011 and 2013), Kenneth Myers Jr., E-’07 (triple jump, 2004), Wayne Langbein, ’96 (discus, 1993); Richard Jacobs, ’91 (decathlon, 1990), Betsy Bachtel, ’89 (3,000 and 5,000 meter run, 1986), and David Conley, ’85 (discus, 1983). Gregory was named United East Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Year, and was named to the conference first team. Four other Gallaudet men’s indoor track and field athletes received conference postseason honors as well: pole vaulter Liam Painter (first team); and 400-meter sprinters Gareth Ashton (second team) and Trey Johnson (third team)
Andrew Suarez (Fairview, Texas) and Alexys Santiago (Hatboro, Pennsylvania) were named to the United East Conference Indoor Track and Field All-Sportsmanship Team.
