The 2024 American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) conference, held May 29 to June 1, in Atlanta, Georgia, showcased the important and varied work Gallaudet is doing to improve the lives of people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, and DeafBlind. More than two dozen faculty, staff, and students took part in the program, which encompassed the fields of counseling, education, interpretation, and more.

On April 4, students taking the Human Anatomy and Physiology II and Anatomy and Physiology for Human Service Majors courses, taught by Dr. Alicia Wooten and Dr. Adebowale Ogunjirin, respectively, had the chance to visit Howard University’s Medical Cadaver Lab. Howard has extended this invitation to Gallaudet students for the past five years, and it has become a favorite field trip destination.
“Fall Prevention in ASL-Using Deaf Older Adults,” a study proposed by a group of Gallaudet faculty, has just received an R15 grant from the National Institutes of Health for $397,076. The project, supported by the National Institute of Aging under award number R15AG087454-01, is led by Dr. Chizuko Tamaki, AuD program director in the School of Human Services and Sciences, Dr. Carol Cutler Riddick, a professor in Physical Education and Recreation (PER) with extensive credentials and experience working with older adults, and Dr. Janis Cole, a Deaf researcher/translator with a background in social work, Deaf/Cultural Studies, and linguistics. The team also includes Vanessa Arp, a Deaf member of the PER who among other responsibilities teaches an Adapted PER course.
