Overview
The Sign Phonetics and Physiology Lab investigates the relationship between motor control
and the structure of signed languages. We use video and optical motion capture to study:
- the phonetics of ASL
- the relationship between sign phonetics and phonology
- how signing is affected by adult neurogenic disorders, such as stroke, Parkinson’s
- disease and traumatic brain injury
- sign and gesture production in individuals with and without communication
disorders - the physical realization of prosody in the sign modality
Facilities
The lab is equipped with a five-camera Optitrack motion capture system.
People
The lab is directed by Dr. Martha Tyrone. Students in the MS-SLP and HSLS PhD programs,
as well as students in other programs at Gallaudet, contribute to research in the lab.
