Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of...
This fall, Gallaudet hosted Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, outgoing executive director of United Nations Women, along with Bulelani Ngcuka, human rights advocate; South African Ambassador to the U.S. Nomaindiya Cathleen Mfeketo; Charlotte Vuyiswa McClain-Nhlapo, World Bank Disability and Inclusivity Advisor; and Andrew “Pioneer” Nhlapo, South African Embassy staff member. Special thanks to Lindsay Dunn, ’85, manager of education programs in the School of Arts and Humanities, for inviting them to campus. Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka was previously invited to speak at a Gallaudet commencement, but had to decline due to a schedule conflict. However, she promised to visit Gallaudet again in the future.
The group toured the campus, visiting the Maguire Welcome Center, where they learned about Gallaudet’s history; College Hall, where they met with President Cordano; and the James Lee Sorenson Language and Communication Center. Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka acknowledged the need for more support and resources for deaf South African and African students, and said she wishes to further advocate for them.
We thank Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka for visiting Gallaudet University!
