Outstanding HSLS Ph.D. Student Award

for a Ph.D. student in HSLS who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and/or collaborative endeavors

Dr. Dan Talian

Congratulations to Dr. Dan Talian, our Outstanding HSLS Ph.D. Student! Dan is an audiologist, currently working in the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He joined our program in 2019 because he wanted to study vestibular sciences. He worked with Dr. Chiz Tamaki here at Gallaudet and was a research fellow at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. During his time in the Ph.D. program, Dan published four articles and presented many times. He was also awarded the national CAPCSD Ph.D. Scholarship. Congratulations Dan!

Kady Patterson

Steven Ackley Memorial Scholarship

for a student in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences who exemplifies the legacy of Dr. Steve Ackley, who was a beloved colleague, mentor and friend to many; this memorial award is made in celebration of his warmth, humor and devotion to his students and his commitment to audiology and deaf education

Alaina Milam

Alaina’s passion and enthusiasm in serving the Deaf+ community is evident. She takes every opportunity available to her at Gallaudet campus in order to enhance the clinical services for the Deaf+ community. She coordinated a presentation on how to better serve DeafBlind people to enhance the department’s understanding of service accessibility.

Paige Phifer

The speech-language pathology program is thrilled to announce our award recipient for May 2024. This award is called the Excellence in Speech-Language Pathology Award. This year the SLP program selected Paige Phifer. Since entering the program last fall, Paige has demonstrated academic and clinical success. Paige actively participates in class, collaborates with peers, and demonstrates a positive attitude to expand her clinical knowledge and skills. Congratulations Paige!

Adrienne L. Kaplan Memorial Endowment Fund

for the professional training of outstanding students in order to facilitate the provision of service to deaf and hard of hearing individuals and established by Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Kaplan in memory of their daughter who, although not deaf, had a physical disability that impacted her ability to communicate

The speech-language pathology program is thrilled to announce our award recipient for May 2024. This award is called the Adrienne Kaplan Memorial Endowment Fund. This year the SLP program selected Hannah Tran. Hannah will soon finish her first year here at Gallaudet. She entered the program last Fall. Since that time, she has demonstrated strong academic and clinical success. Hannah demonstrates curiosity and motivation to learn and is committed to working with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Congratulations Hannah.

Seltzer League Award

for a student who has demonstrated excellence in both the academic and clinical areas of the Speech-Language Pathology Program, a student who is expected to broaden the understanding of hearing and hearing loss

Aimee Pina

The speech-language pathology program is thrilled to announce our award recipient for May 2024. This award is called the W. Seltzer League Award. This year the SLP program selected Aimee Pina. Aimee will graduate this May. During her two years at Gallaudet, she has expanded her academic and clinical knowledge and skills. She demonstrates a motivation to learn and works hard to support clients from diverse backgrounds including the deaf community. We expect Aimee to make significant contributions to the field. Dr. Larry G. Stewart, a Professor of Psychology at Gallaudet University, was committed to understanding the lived experiences of deaf and hard of hearing people, as well as supporting these communities through clinical and behavioral health services. To honor Dr. Stewart and the spirit of his work, an annual award recognizes outstanding doctoral students in the Clinical Psychology PhD Program. The recipients of the 2024 award are Dr. Emily Bramande and Dr. Brianna Hernandez. Throughout their time in the program, they have demonstrated exemplary scholarship and a commitment to the highest standards of professional practice.
Dr. Bramande’s research has focused on the experiences of intimate partner violence among deaf and hard of hearing communities, and the development of culturally and linguistically appropriate and accessible ASL screening measures for use by medical and behavioral health professionals. Dr. Hernandez has investigated the experiences of discrimination that marginalized deaf and hard of hearing individuals potentially encounter and the possible impacts on their use of mental health services, as well as their access to and satisfaction with these services. Drs. Bramande and Hernandez also have extensive behavioral health training with people across the lifespan and they intend to continue this work as part of their professional practice. Congratulations!

This award is for a graduate student in education judged most likely to contribute to the field of teaching deaf students and to remain in the field for some time. The award goes to Priscilla Biskupiak. Priscilla is clearly passionate about elevating her students' learning experiences through her course work in our program. Priscilla's assignments and projects reflect a very deep, and thorough thinking of how to best support her deaf students as bilingual learners.

Majorie Stull Memorial Scholarship Award

MA in International Development Program

IDMA Program Award for Excellence in Policy Development and Research

for a student who has demonstrated excellence in policy development and research while enrolled in the International Development Program

Aanuoluwapo Omoleye

We are delighted to present the ‘IDMA Award for Excellence in Policy Development and Research’ to Aanuoluwapo “Aanu” Omoleye. During her graduate career, Aanu developed policy initiatives and engaged research efforts in every setting she participated in. A critically-engaged observer of inclusive development policies and practices, Aanu offered her insights to International Development partners and networks, as well as to Gallaudet University campus organizations, including presenting on inclusive development topics for Chemonics International, the World Bank Youth Summit, and advancing inclusive development principles with the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area - for which Aanu was selected for their prestigious Graduate Fellows Program. In a Washington, DC-based internship with Global Ties US, Aanu pursued research on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility within educational exchange programming. For her international internship, Aanu secured a competitive internship position with the International Labour Organization in Thailand, serving as their Gender and Disability Inclusion Intern, with responsibility for assisting with technical reports, publications, disability inclusion training, and events support with teams across Southeast and East Asia. Congratulations Aanu!

Euphrasia Mbewe Award for Excellence in Social Advocacy Work

for a student who has demonstrated excellence in social advocacy work while enrolled in the International Development Program

Nelky Perez

We are honored to present Nelky Perez with the ‘Euphrasia Mbewe Award for Excellence in Social Advocacy Work’. Nelky entered the IDMA Program with a deep commitment to social change. Seeking to contribute to advancements in quality education, and to Deaf organizational capacity-building and leadership, Nelky’s academic projects, professional field placements, and engagement with International Development networks, all demonstrated passion for examining social issues and developing solution-focused approaches to address them. Notably, Nelky pursued a Washington, DC-based internship with the DC Mayor’s Office of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing (MODDHH) where she served as a policy analyst and also supported the MODDHH across all of their mission areas. For her international internship, Nelky engaged Deaf leaders with Deaf.Bg - a Deaf-Led Organizational network in Sofia, Bulgaria - where she worked closely with the Deaf.Bg team to conduct data collection including needs assessment of the Bulgaria’s Deaf Community to support their mission of increasing opportunities for the Bulgarian Deaf Community. Nelky met with various Deaf organizations, Deaf schools, and government officials to inquire and research on the overall attitude towards the sign language environment for Deaf children and youth, gathering insights and data for analysis in order to advocate for bilingual education in Bulgaria. We are proud to present the award to two students this year - Bonnie Barrett and Misa Suzuki. They’re both wonderful students, who have regularly attended classes and diligently done their coursework. And they’ve also done the work in a way that clearly shows care and reflection. Both Bonnie and Misa have brought their lived experiences, especially with language, and carefully reflected upon such in connection to signed language research and signing communities. They’ve impressed us (the LIN faculty) with their contributions, their reflections, and their regard for their peers. Brenna Smith

Hello! My name is Dirksen Bauman. Every year the Deaf Studies Department gives the George C. Veditz award. This award is intended to recognize students for excellent academic performance paired with activism which is dedicated toward changing the world to make it a better place for deaf and hard of hearing students and individuals. This year we are thrilled and proud to announce that the winner is Brenna Smith. In our program over the past two years, Brenna has been fully invested in her academic work. Her knowledge of theory and academic performance has been impressive. Her thesis combines theory and activism through its goal to produce materials to make Deaf Studies abstract, theoretical concepts accessible to a wide audience. Instead of sequestering theory for only those with advanced proficiency in English, her project helps to disseminate theory widely so community members may be empowered by theory, by learning, by acquiring knowledge through a bilingual ASL and English website prototype. The extensive written part of her thesis provides a rationale why this project is important to empower students of Deaf Studies. We are grateful for Brenna’s contribution to the department and field of Deaf Studies. Thank you.

PhD in Educational Neuroscience Outstanding Research Award

for a student who has consistently demonstrated outstanding research and scientific scholarship, originality and creativity in his or her science, and scholarly achievements in research commensurate with the highest standards of cognitive neuroscience and educational neuroscience

Carly Leannah

The recipient of the 2024 PhD in Educational Neuroscience Outstanding Research Award has been highly productive throughout their four years in the PEN program. She led a research project during her first year which she published as first author, followed by two more peer-reviewed publications. She has presented three talks at conferences in Japan and California, as well as four poster presentations at international conferences. Her doctoral dissertation contains highly original research that demonstrates expertise in embodied learning, educational technology, and STEM. This dissertation work is already making important contributions to science and society. Congratulations, CARLY LEANNAH!

PhD in Educational Neuroscience Research Based Translation Award

for a student who has made a significant contribution to the translation of basic scientific discoveries in cognitive neuroscience and educational neuroscience through the advancement of an original creation or contribution that has the potential to transform society, policies, and individual lives spanning the nation and world

Rachel Sortino

The 2024 Ph.D. in Educational Neuroscience Research-Based Translation Award is presented to a student who has exemplified many skills related to research translation and dissemination. This student has been mentored by their advisor, Dr. Rachel Pizzie, in the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (CAN) Lab and Dr. Bradley White in the Research Translation class. This student showed exceptional motivation and skill in developing a research brief for VL2 with a team including PEN students Christina Kim and Casey Spelman. With her own unique insights, creativity, and perseverance, this student led the effort to transform this excellent research brief from class-related work to a real-world document designed for parents, educational professionals, and members of the public. Congratulations, Rachel Sortino!

Weiner Family Research Award

For a graduate student whose outstanding research that adds to an understanding of diagnostic techniques and treatments aimed at improving mental health outcomes of individuals who are deaf

Erin Timperlake

This award recipient is a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology whose research has focused on the development of the first culturally and linguistically accessible and appropriate cognitive screening measure for use with Deaf adults in the United States in American Sign Language (ASL). Cognitive screening measures are often used with psychiatric and neurological populations to best understand their functioning at the time of the evaluation or to monitor disease process and treatment outcome. Having an accessible and appropriate screening measure will reduce the risk that Deaf individuals will be incorrectly diagnosed by professionals. She plans to defend her dissertation this summer and will continue her work in this area. Congratulations, Erin Timperlake!

Graduate Student Scholarly Achievement Award

for a graduate student who completed an outstanding scholarly project during their academic program

Emily Bramande

The recipient of this award is a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology whose research has focused on creating an American Sign Language (ASL) version of a screening tool that can be used to investigate deaf and hard of hearing individuals’ experiences of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Her dissertation study began to explore the feasibility and viability of using this measure with D/HH adults with multiple intersectional identities and to explore questions related to the effects of COVID on IPV among DHH adults, and our understanding of how deaf adults use technology to disclose IPV. Congratulations, Emily Bramande!

Bonnie Ratliff

The recipient of this award is an Au.D. student who has engaged in research about cultural responsiveness development in graduate students, analyzing qualitative data focusing on the outcomes of training activities designed to support Au.D. and SLP graduate students’ cultural responsiveness. She worked collaboratively with her mentors to present this research at an international conference and is preparing a manuscript which she plans to submit for publication this month. Congratulations, Bonnie Ratliff!

Graduate Student Outstanding Achievement Award

for a graduate student who made significant contributions to their field during their academic program

Carly Leannah

The recipient of this award is a Ph.D. student in educational neuroscience who has demonstrated outstanding scholarly productivity throughout her time in the program, leading multiple projects, including an experimental neuroscience study examining how deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) young adults learn STEM content in immersive virtual reality (VR). Her work has shown a high degree of critical, innovative thinking, future-oriented research questions, and relevance for the DHH and scientific communities. Congratulations, Carly Leannah!

Aanuoluwapo “Aanu” Omoleye

The recipient of this award is an M.A. student in international development who is recognized for her commitment and positive impact on her program, our campus community, and beyond. She led and collaborated on campus activities, such as the monthly “The International Tea Party” event, showcasing presentations by international students and other international guests. She has served in the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of International Affairs. As Vice President of the African Student Union she also co-hosted numerous ASU events She also competed in the 2023 Bison Tank competition, winning first place for her innovation ‘AbleBooks Africa” which is dedicated to producing books whose characters represent a wide range of young persons with disabilities. She has led the development of several books with her collaborators and they are already in distribution. Congratulations, Aanu Omoleye!
