Overview

Year: 2019-2021
Focus: PROMIS-Deaf Profile: Deaf Caregiver Health
NIH Award: 3R01DC014463-05S2

This project uses mixed methods approach to include perspectives of Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) caregivers who provide care or assistance to family and friends with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).

Documentary: With Love

Due to stigma, there is a lack of awareness of dementia within the Deaf community and limited resources available for deaf caregivers who are taking care of their loved ones with dementia. In this film, Frank and Eileen share their intense but heartfelt experiences with taking care of Frank’s mother who has dementia.

Update #1

Our lab received a grant from National Institute on Aging, supporting our study on deaf caregivers health quality. The video below is a promotional video designed to reach out to potential research candidates.

“We received funding from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to interview 40 deaf people who care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or related dementias. So far, we interviewed 18 deaf caregivers. Most of them are White. We are now looking for deaf caregivers who self-identify as Black, Asian, Latinx, or biracial. If you self-identify with those following information and are currently caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s or dementia, we would love to interview you about your experience. The interview will be done on videophone (VP) and it will take one hour. Any information relating to your identification from the interview will be translated into ID number and after feeding data in the transcription, the video will be destroyed. You will get $25 giftcard for your participation.”

Update #2

Through collaboration with Deaf Seniors of America (DSA) and National Association for the Deaf, Center for Deaf Health Equity (DHE) gathered a number of deaf/hard-of-hearing adult signing participants. The video below provides update on our center’s findings.
