Description:

The National Institute of Speech and Hearing has been in operation since 1997 with support from the Government of Kerala for the welfare and rehabilitation of deaf and hard of hearing persons. NISH is the first institution in the country to start Degree Programs for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) persons: the Bachelor of Computer Science (B.Sc.) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). Both these programs are affiliated to University of Kerala. NISH has developed a 6 month intensive

Module for Augmenting Communication Skills (MACS) program with a special curriculum to enhance the verbal and written communication skills of DHH students, which will help them succeed in the professional workplace. NISH has also successfully implemented a pre-school program for children 0 to 3 years with a special curriculum emphasis on speech and language development. Children who complete from the pre-school program are placed in the mainstream schools and have been found to be very overwhelmingly successful.
