Course Overview

This survey course examines the political, social, and economic development of American history from early Colonial to Reconstruction. It provides a framework for understanding U.S. history from mainstream narratives as well as diverse perspectives. Students will be challenged to engage historical arguments, debates, and interpretation through readings, class discussions, videos, and class presentations. In addition, we will discuss the process of historical writing and its relevance in contemporary society.
