Overview

The Deaf Studies Digital Journal (DSDJ) is a peer-reviewed, digital journal in American Sign Language and English text, dedicated to advancing the cultural, creative, and critical output of work in and about sign languages and its communities in the form of scholarly video articles, original works of signed literature, interviews, reviews, and historical resources.

This project will preserve and migrate past issues of DSDJ to a new open-access, technologically sustainable platform, which adheres to and advances accessibility standards in publishing through fully bilingual video and text articles, advanced interactive videos, integration into library databases, and innovative peer-review processes that support the exclusive use of sign language to produce the next iteration of DSDJ in an effort to transform scholarly communication.

We are thrilled to announce that the Deaf Studies Digital Journal (DSDJ) will be relaunched in 2019 after a four-year hiatus. After successfully publishing four issues spanning from 2009 to 2014 and with 181 contributors in a wide range of topics related to Deaf Studies scholarship, DSDJ has recently received new funding through a grant awarded through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). DSDJ is well on its way to publishing new issues with a newly designed platform that is supported by the University of Michigan Publishing.

The goal of DSDJ is to publish and revitalize by spreading cultural, creative, and academic work related to signing communities. The journal will be presented through a sign-centric digital platform.

Dr. Patrick Boudreault, Executive Editor, and Brianna Keogh, Managing Editor, are the team leads. They are working closely with an international advisory board and the former editors and co-founders of DSDJ, Dr. Dirksen Bauman, Dr. Ben Bahan, and Melissa Malzkuhn and current student assistants, Andrew Biskipuak and Iosif Shayman. DSDJ has already begun the migration process of articles, videos, and other content to the newly designed publishing platform. We look forward to the forthcoming issues and the future of the journal.

Throughout the article, any outside sources should be referenced in APA style 7th edition in the supporting English text. However, the ASL or signed video will focus on delivering the content in your own words clearly and articulately and does not need to include citation information. The translation needs to include in-text citations with author and year information and will appear alongside the video in both captions and a movable transcript. If the reference explicitly addresses an outside reference that you feel is worth mentioning in the video, that is up to the author’s discretion. All references must be documented in the English translation, so ensure you make note of citations for the final publication.
