Meningococcal disease (meningitis) is a serious illness caused by a bacterial or viral infection resulting in inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to permanent brain damage, loss of limbs, or even death. The disease is spread by direct contact with oral secretions of an infected person.

In the past 5 years, the incidence of meningitis outbreak has risen on college campuses. The meningococcal vaccine offers protection from becoming infected by 2 of the 3 types of bacteria meningitis. Additional information on meningococcal disease can be found at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
